Nothing has been more overhyped in the food industry than the whole "gluten-free" concept. Glutens are proteins found in some grains like wheat. A very small percentage of the population, about 1 in 100 people, develops Celiac Disease, which makes them allergic to glutens. Everyone else can eat glutens without much fear. Or so we thought. Now a new scientific study has shown that there is another population group at risk.

How Aviation Has Changed Our Lives
My father once said "only someone who flies would ever care about the airline industry". He meant that when airlines were struggling to pay the bills he didn't care about them because he didn't fly.

The Makings of a Delicious Salad
I'm in a salad mood today. My favorite salad is not too heavy but I do enjoy eating a hearty salad meal. Here is what I would put on a salad if I had everything to choose from.

Eat Eggs to Improve Your Health!
You have heard all your life that eggs are a source of fat and not very healthy. Don't eat the yolks. Just eat the egg whites. But over the last few years scientists have learned just how wrong that advice was. Eggs, it turns out, are a source of healthy dietary fat (and that makes sense because those mama hens are producing food for their baby chicks). Let's take a quick look at eggs again!

How to Lower Bad Cholesterol without Killing Yourself
If your doctor is concerned about your cholesterol levels sooner or later he will recommend you start taking statins. Unfortunately statins are not a safe medication. As many as 40% of people experience side effects with statins (including memory loss) and they have been shown to be mostly ineffective in preventing heart attacks in people who have not already had heart attacks. So why do doctors prescribe so many statins? I don't know and I am not going to dwell on that.

So You Want to Eat Only Organic Food?
I'm not really convinced that we should be buying organic food at the marketplace. Paying extra money for food just never made sense to me. I would rather grow my own organics in a garden at home. In some towns even apartment dwellers can grow a garden if they rent a plot from a community gardening center.

How to Be Your Own Casino
Do you like to gamble? I occasionally spin a coin in the slots, as they say. I'm not much of a card player but I know I can drop a few hundred dollars at a casino when the mood takes me. After thinking about my last round of losses I imagined what it would be like if I had my own casino. Then I could be the boss of my own fortunes, right?

Do You Think Wood-fired Pizza is Better than Other Styles?
I hear people rave on and on about "Chicago style pizza" and "New York style pizza" but I have never really been big fans of those types of pizza. To be honest, I wish Pizza Hut would go back to its old recipes from 15-20 years ago for the thin crust supremes. But there is one style of pizza that I really do enjoy: wood-fired pizza.

The Impossible Task of Saving Money with Coupons
I get it. You save money with coupons. You buy products for less than you would normally pay for them if you have the right coupons. Where I run into problems is getting the right coupons.

Adventures in Office Furniture: Or, How to Seat Your Boss at Work
I was once asked to help pick out some office furniture for a small company. It was kind of a neat afternoon excursion. Four of us went out to a few office supply and furniture showrooms to look at chairs, tables, and desks. You never realize just how much thought goes into the selection of good office furniture until you start to do it yourself. Suddenly, you're keenly aware of who is too tall or too short for all the "average" chairs.

How to Build a City that Lasts for Thousands of Years
We have many ancient cities around the world that have stood for thousands of years. But those cities have changed hands many times through the centuries and most of their ancient structures have tumbled down under the weight of time. But one civilization built structures that have stood for thousands of years: Rome.
